Here are the answers to common questions about what to expect and how to prepare for a massage session with me.
The types of massage I perform are manual lymph drainage (MLD), myofascial release, prenatal massage (pregnancy massage), and oncology massage as well as some swedish massage (relaxation massage) and trigger point therapy. You can find detailed information about all of these on the massage techniques page.
Expect a very light, relaxing technique. People often fall asleep during a session, and many people report feeling both rested and energized afterwards. To be most effective, depending on your condition, several sessions may need to be scheduled close together initially, possibly several times a week. For lymphedema treatments, lymph drainage sessions will conclude with bandaging to keep the fluid from refilling the limb between sessions.
Myofascial work is slower and more gentle during the session than a traditional swedish or deep tissue type massage. During the session you will feel some gentle stretching of skin, muscle, and connective tissue. With other techniques including relaxation massage, pregnancy massage or oncology massage, massage oil or gel may be used, depending on the work being done. After the session you may feel some soreness, with occasional bruised sensations, more often a feeling similar to "work-out soreness." Often people fall asleep on the table during the massage. After the massage you may feel sleepy, energized, calm, sometimes dizzy. All of these sensations can be improved by drinking plenty of water after your massage, and perhaps taking some quiet time to sit and rest.
The difference is in the experience of the client. I am still addressing deeper tissues, sometimes reflexively, only touching more superficial tissues and sometimes by manually releasing the deep tissues. However, unlike a "deep tissue" massage at a spa, the client often does not realize how deep the work is and does not have a sensation of pain or discomfort during the session.
Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, body positioning will allow you to be on your side or be in a reclining position. I will help you adjust the supports (as well as room temperature and lighting) to be sure you are comfortable throughout the session. Prenatal massage is always designed for the comfort of the client.
What you choose to wear during a massage session is up to you. After you fill out the initial paperwork, we will discuss your goals for the session, any health concerns, look at your posture or other contributing factors. Then I will step out of the massage room, allowing you to disrobe to your level of comfort. You are in control of how much clothing you would like to keep on. When you are on the table under the sheet, I will return to the room to begin the session.
I do appreciate the thought, but I do not accept tips. For those clients who cannot accept this policy, all tips will be donated to the Massage Therapy Foundation.
At this time I do not accept insurance as payment for a massage session. Accepted forms of payment are listed with my policies.
I require all clients to fill out a health history form which also includes an informed consent and liability statement. Please plan to fill out this form upon arrival at your first session, or a copy can be e-mailed to you ahead of time.
